Scientists build double-floating-gate FET, believe it could revolutionize computer memory: "Look, we get it, you want DRAM that behaves like flash, flash that behaves like DRAM, and everything in between -- speedy computer memory that doesn't lose its data when the power goes off, and lasts for years on end. Well, it looks there's a new challenger about to enter that ring -- double floating-gate field effect transistors, currently in prototype form at North Carolina State University. Whereas the single floating-gate variety is currently responsible for the flash memory in your USB keys and SSDs, the second floating gate lets bits of data stay in an active, ready state, but the computer can also apply a higher voltage to 'freeze' them in place. Since the memory can switch between static and dynamic modes in a single cycle and the data never disappears in between, researchers imagine the new tech could lead to instant-on computers and power-saving techniques that shut down idle memory banks. Japanese retailer JTT has already proven itself to be a fan of tiny cameras, but it's truly outdone itself with its latest offering: the Chobi Cam One. At last you'll be able to carry a DSLR in your pocket, with only some minor trade-offs in things like image quality, features, and usefulness. You can swap in your choice of three different magnetically-attached lenses, though -- and while you won't exactly get great pictures or video from the thing, you can at least store a lot of them thanks to the camera's microSD card slot. Look for the camera itself to set you back ¥9,800 (or about $118), with extra lenses running between $30 and $60 (bundles are also available).

Tener un HTPC en el salón para reproducir nuestros archivos multimedia o conectar una computadora al televisor habitualmente conlleva el problema del control. ¿Cómo manejamos el cursor? ¿Cómo nos movemos a través de la interfaz?

En muchas ocasiones basta con el uso de un mando a distancia, pero para quien se siente más cómodo con un ratón y un teclado en las manos, el problema del control puede convertirse en un dolor de cabeza. No en cuanto al teclado, pues basta con utilizar uno de tipo inalámbrico. Pero el ratón es harina de otro costal pues es complicado usarlo sobre superficies blandas, como los sofás. Bueno, eso era almenos hasta hoy, día en que Logitech ha decidido presentar el ratón todoterreno (literalmente) definitivo.

Logitech Wireless Mouse M515 es el ratón ideal para ser utilizado en el salón, sobre el sofá. Pero no sólo funciona sobre esta superficie, sino que podremos usarlo también sobre una manta, sobre una almohada o encima de la cama en nuestra habitación. El ratón tiene la parte inferior sellada de forma que no se acumule polvo o pelusas que entorpezcan el funcionamiento. Además, el receptor inalámbrico es compatible con el sistema Logitech Unifying, por lo que podremos utilizarlo también con otros periféricos que usen este sistema (por ejemplo, un teclado) sin tener que ocupar otro slot USB con un nuevo receptor.

Otra característica interesante es el sensor de detección de la mano que lleva integrado, de forma que el M515 se activará únicamente cuando lo toquemos, y se desactivará cuando hayamos dejado de utilizar el ratón. Esto permitirá gestionar de forma eficaz el consumo de batería. Una batería (de tipo pila) que, por cierto, según palabras de Logitech, tiene una duración de hasta 2 años. Me cuesta creer que un ratón pueda aguantar tanto sin cambiarle las pilas, pero tampoco creía posible que fuésemos a manejar una consola de videojuegos con gestos y ahí tenemos a Kinect.

Respecto al diseño, tiene forma ergonómica para adaptarse cómodamente a la mano, y sigue unas líneas bastante clásicas y nada sorprendentes. En este sentido, hereda en cierta forma el aspecto de otro ratón todoterreno de la marca, el Logitech Anywhere Mouse, que nos permitía utilizar el ratón sobre superfícies de cristal.

Logitech Wireless Mouse M515 estará disponible en Europa a principios del mes de abril, con un precio de 50 euros (68 dólares), un precio bastante ajustado para lo que ofrece.

El popular proyecto XBMC se pone cada vez más interesante. Este centro multimedia gratuito y open source se ha podido instalar en cualquier ordenador lleve Linux, Mac o Windows, pero es bastante interesante instalarlo en cualquier PC que tengas como centro multimedia. Tenerlo en tu ordenador está bien, pero mucho mejor tenerlo como centro multimedia en tu salón.

Pero si a algo se le tenía ganas es que un sistema como este XBMC llegase a un Apple TV de nuevo, darle un mejor uso a la segunda generación que se ha convertido en un reproductor de vídeo en streaming bastante interesante, sobre todo por su bajo precio, menos de 100 euros y/o dólares.

El equipo de XBMC ha confirmado que han logrado instalar este software en un Apple TV de segunda generación. Ahora este pequeño reproductor capaz de reproducir vídeo a 1080p vía HDMI tiene mucho más valor. Atentos porque esto mejorará la forma de usar un Apple TV, añadiendo la posibilidad de hacer streaming de tus vídeos en otros ordenadores o dispositivos vía UPnP.

Se puede descargar desde el wiki de XBMC pero necesitarás hacerle jailbreak a tu Apple TV.

Para iOS también

Esta aplicación también toca los dispositivos móviles de Apple, tanto en iPhone o también iPad ahora también pueden usar XBMC, pero eso si, tendrá que ser vía jailbreak y descargando la aplicación desde Cydia, la tienda alternativa libre de aplicaciones para iOS.

Como se puede ver en este segundo vídeo la verdad es que la aplicación en si no es más que un port para iOS. La interfaz no ha cambiado, en un iPhone se ve todo más pequeño pero aun así se puede escanear otros dispositivos conectados a la misma red Wi-Fi y reproducir vídeos o imágenes.

Pero imaginate con un teclado Bluetooth, un iPhone o iPad con esta aplicación y el kit para conectarlo a una pantalla más grande, sería una forma de crear un centro multimedia para el salón portátil.
